You might be asking why you have to complete a project for your literature circle. The answer is simple, I used to have students work in groups and complete worksheets, the problem, one or two people would read while the others sat back and did nothing. Projects allow me to make sure that ALL members in a lit circle complete the reading. Everyone in the group is responsible for the group's grade. If one member slacks off, the group grade goes down. It will be the group's responsibility of the group to make sure that EVERYONE is completing the reading.
When I started this last year, I was able to catch up to 50% of a class not doing any of the reading. After that first time, people were really choosy about who they wanted in their group. There were others who really rode their group members to complete the work so the grade wouldn't drop.
I will give Fridays as a work day for lit circles to complete project work or to read. Please use this time wisely or it will be taken away and you will need to complete the projects on your own time. You'll be able to chat with each other about the book or simply have social talk while you work on projects. You can also help each other with completing the project on time.
FIRST QUARTER LIT CIRCLE PROJECT - SEE RUBRIC AT BOTTOM OF PAGE
Scrapbook or Photo Album: Each member of the group will create their own scrapbook or photo album. Each member of the group must choose a different character. You might think that it will be easier to choose a main character, but sometimes you are very limited in how creative you can be. If you choose a minor character, you may find that you can create an entire story about the character that the book didn't go into.
Scrapbook Ideas: Include pictures of memorable events, family and friends, (PICTURES ARE YOUR THEME), writings to explain the pictures (maybe famous quotes, personal info, details about the picture), stickers, trinkets, small keepsake items, dried flowers, dried leaves, ribbons, ink stamps, signatures of people in pictures, cards, love notes/personal notes, layered pieces of colored paper to frame the different items on the page.
Photo Album Ideas: Pictures obviously, dates, explain the situation pertaining to the picture, varied sizes of pictures, varied color and black and white pictures, professional pictures, personally taken pictures, candid pictures of the character unaware that the picture was being taken, special event pictures, class pictures, pets, family/friends, etc.

Performance: Complete group project. You must write a five minute script, include props, set, and costumes. Each member will play a part in the performance - you might have to alter a scene to make this happen. Each member will need to memorize their lines. Hidden cues are allowed. Script in hand will lower the grade by 10% for each member with one.

Book to Movie: Each member of the group will take a piece of the following 5. Everyone must be able to discuss the book. There will be a question and answer time after the presentation. You might create the movie poster but you might be asked questions as to how your interpretation fits the book as it's translated into the move. I will be the person you are trying to sell the movie to and guest teachers and/or administrators will be in to help grade presentations.
